Kayak Storage Solution
My kayak storage solution used to be the floor. I was stepping around the boat, moving things around every time I needed to get something out of the garage. Our kayak storage system was going to get our boat damaged, or someone hurt (me) by tripping over items on the floor.
Storing our kayak on the floor used over 8 feet of floor space. My bicycle was leaning on it, and I’d have to move everything reach the mower and mow the lawn. I wanted our kayak storage to be easy for me to manage.
Kayak storage is very inexpensive, and it saves time. I keep all kayaking gear together. Kayaking life vests, shoes, even coolers are all kept together. No reason to leave something behind. I look back at the kayak storage wall. If something is there, I need to take it with us.
I bought two (2) large padded hooks at Home Depot to be my kayak storage solution. I drilled pilot holes in the garage studs. I used the screws that came with the hooks, drilled them through the hooks and into the wall studs. These hooks have held up my kayak for more than one year. At first I tossed our life vests into the hanging kayak, with the paddles. All the gear didn't dry out very well. I put hooks on the wall over the kayak, and stuffed the jackets onto the hooks. My kayak storage wasn’t quite right yet. I brought out a few coat hangers, put the life vests onto the hangers, and then hung them onto the hooks. Now our kayak gear will drip dry, and stay cleaner through the off seasons.
I used tea cup hooks, and I twisted one into the wall by hand and I hang my wet boat shoes below the life vests. I have a bicycle sharing space with my kayaking storage system. I have the bicycle hanging from a nail in the wall stud. This has also been hanging for over one year, and is easy for me to take down and put back up. I can reach other necessary items in the garage, like the lawn mower. Chores still need to be done.
My kayak storage solution is very inexpensive. My adventure gear is all up off the floor, easy to reach and safely out of the way. My kayak storage is keeping my gear safe from damage, and me safe from tripping over loose items. My kayak, life vests, shoes, paddles hang on the wall, and will air dry quicker than if they were dropped on the floor and let water pool around them.
Our garage isn't finished inside as you can see. I can still organize my storage space so that it is useful and safe to walk around until. I have more garage to organize. I best get to it.
I hope my kayak storage solution inspires you to install your own kayak storage system. |
